Becoming an Egg Donor is one of the most selfless, rewarding things a woman can do. However, there are certain questions you need to ask to know if you are ready to move forward with the process.

A lot of prospective donors complete their application confidently, thinking they are prepared to donate eggs, only to realize that they cannot proceed because of certain information and physical restrictions. It is really important to check your Eligibility. So, in this article, we discuss some important questions you need to ask yourself before deciding to become an Egg Donor.

1. Why do I want to become an egg donor?

It’s important to understand your motivation for wanting to become an egg donor. Are you doing it for financial gain, to help a family member, or to help someone who is unable to conceive naturally? Understanding your motivation can help you make an informed decision.

2. Am I comfortable with the egg donation process?

Egg donation is a medical procedure that can be physically and emotionally demanding. It’s important to research the process. Ask medical professionals questions to ensure that you are comfortable with what will be required of you.

The odds are that you feel like you don’t have enough information about egg donation. Or you think that there is an overwhelming amount of information out there, making it hard to differentiate between fact and fiction. These two steps are the first thing that you should do:

  • Research the process, you have to go through as much information on Egg donation as you can. Read blogs, books, watch videos which are excellent sources of information about egg donation. You may also get the opinions of women who have passed through the egg donation process.
  • Consult medical professionals : Talk to some medical professional. Get comprehensive details about every step of the process from medical professional.

3. Am I prepared for the time commitment involved in egg donation?

An egg donation cycle takes an average of four months to complete.

Once you pass the online application, you are going to undergo preliminary screening, which usually includes 1 to 4 visits to the clinic within 2 months.

After getting our medical team’s approval, you will be allowed to participate in our egg donation program.

You will begin cycling, which will comprise 4-7clinic visits within two months. We often fix our office visits in the morning to reduce interference in your daily schedule.

It’s only on the day of egg retrieval that you will need to take time off school or work. While the procedure takes around 20 minutes, you will need to rest for the remainder of the day. A lot of donors resume their normal activities the next day.

4. Would you be available on call for the next few months?

Are you ready to reside within a two-hour radius from one of our facilities for the next couple of months? You will have to make approximately 7 to 12 visits to our facility during the screening and the egg donation process. Going to and for at this time can be very tasking on the Egg Donor.

Donors living outside the two-hour radius run the risk of having the process postponed. It may end if they did not come back in time to complete it. So, if you answer “No” to the question above, you are not a good candidate for egg donation.

4. Can you provide an accurate and up-to-date medical history across three family generations of your family?

You must be able to tell us about mental disorders, genetic and medical conditions, deaths, and the age they occurred across three generations.

Our geneticist will use this information to determine whether or not you are qualified to donate.

At Lucina Egg Bank, we want to make sure we offer recipients the best chances of becoming pregnant with a healthy baby. Also, we want to ensure that you don’t have any serious health problems and that we are not endangering your health by accepting you into our egg donation program.

If you are unsure whether you can provide all these details, you will not be allowed to undergo an egg donation cycle.

5.Are you ready to pause or remove the birth control/ any kind of medication that you use if asked to?

If you are currently using Depo Provera, a hormonal implant (like Nexplanon or Implanon), or a hormonal IUD (for instance, Skyla or Minera), are you ready to pause or remove it if we invite you for the screening process? All these forms of birth control release hormones that can interfere with the testing results and the fertility medications used during the egg donation process. Hence, it’s important that you stop or remove them before you are accepted into an egg donation program.

Consult your fertility clinic to know the forms of birth control that are allowed. If you are unsure whether you can change. If you cannot remove the form of contraception, you are not a suitable candidate for egg donation.

6. Do you see your menstrual period every 21 to 35 days when you are not on hormonal birth control?

Your periods have to be regular and normal to participate in our egg donation program.

The reason is that irregularities in menstrual cycle length can be a sign that your ovaries are not working properly. Prospective donors are required to undergo comprehensive testing to examine their ovulatory function. And we turned down any applicant found to have abnormalities in their menstrual cycle. So, if you have irregular menstrual periods, then you may not be a good fit for egg donation.
