How are candidates screened (medical, genetic, psychological, drug testing)?

Lucina’s screening process includes:

  • Medical exam and hormone testing
  • Genetic testing for heritable diseases
  • Psychological evaluation

Drug testing and infectious disease screening
Due to these high standards, only about 5% of applicants are accepted into the program.

Can I donate if I’m not a U.S. citizen? (What are the travel/logistics implications?)

Lucina accepts donors from across the U.S. and select international locations, such as Taiwan. If you are an international donor, you’ll travel to our San Diego clinic for the retrieval procedure. The trip typically lasts 18–21 days, and all travel, lodging, and related costs are covered in advance by Lucina.

Can I donate while breastfeeding?

You cannot donate eggs while breastfeeding. Once you have stopped lactation and your natural cycle has resumed, you can apply or continue with screening.

How soon after giving birth can I apply to donate?

You can submit a pre-screening application while still pregnant to check your future eligibility. However, you must complete your pregnancy and stop breastfeeding before starting the donation process.

Can I donate while on birth control?

Yes. You can apply while using birth control. Once you’re accepted into the donor program, your Egg Donor Coordinator will guide you on temporarily discontinuing hormonal contraception when it’s time to begin ovarian stimulation.

Can I donate if I’ve had a hysterectomy or my tubes are tied?

No. Egg donors must have functional ovaries capable of producing mature eggs. If you’ve had a hysterectomy or your ovaries are no longer functional, you would not qualify to donate. However, having your tubes tied (tubal ligation) does not disqualify you, as it doesn’t affect egg production.
