What screening do donors undergo before acceptance?

Only about 5% of applicants meet Lucina’s high standards. Screening includes a full physical exam, infectious disease and drug testing, genetic analysis, and a psychological evaluation. This ensures all donors are healthy, mentally prepared, and meet FDA and ASRM (American Society for Reproductive Medicine) recommendations for egg donation.

Will donating affect my future fertility?

Donating eggs has no long-term impact on your fertility. The process retrieves eggs that your body would naturally release and discard during a normal cycle.

Your total number of eggs (the ovarian reserve) is not reduced, and many donors go on to conceive naturally later in life without issue.

How many eggs are typically retrieved?

The number of eggs retrieved depends on your individual response to the prescribed medications. Most donors produce between 10 and 20 mature eggs, though the exact number can vary.

Our specialists monitor you closely throughout the stimulation phase to ensure a safe and effective outcome.

What happens during the egg retrieval procedure? Is it painful?

The retrieval is a quick, 15-minute procedure done under light anesthesia or sedation, ensuring you feel no discomfort.

You’ll rest at our San Diego clinic for a short time afterward before being discharged the same day.

Some donors experience mild cramping or bloating afterward, but these symptoms resolve within a few days. We recommend resting for at least 24 hours post-procedure for optimal recovery.

Is egg donation safe? What are the risks?

Egg donation is widely regarded as safe. With over 20,000 donor cycles performed in the U.S. each year, complications are rare and typically mild, such as temporary bloating or cramping.

The procedure is performed under expert medical supervision, and there are no known long-term adverse effects on fertility or general health. Your safety is Lucina’s highest priority, and every step is carefully monitored by our experienced clinical team.

When and how will donors be paid?

You’ll receive your full compensation payment on-site after your egg retrieval. Lucina covers all related medical and travel expenses, so you’ll never pay out of pocket for your donation journey.
